2005 San Diego Conference - Recap
STAR TREK 2005
Super Trainers for Animal Research: Training, Retaining & Exchanging Knowledge

August 17 – 19, 2005
Radisson, La Jolla, San Diego, California

The 2005 LAWTE Conference promised a premiere program offering our attendees an opportunity to expand their skills as trainers and providing them with the tools and resources to expand their own institutional animal care and use programs. The Conference hosted the renowned Training Clinic and speakers like Dr Paul Flecknell. We would like to thank our co-sponsor, the San Diego Branch of AALAS, as well as our special sponsors who helped to make this meeting possible:

Merck Research Laboratories
Pfizer
Charles river Laboratories
Novartis
Harlan
AstraZeneca * Sanofi-Aventis

Poster Session Awards: CRL Foundation Sponsored with Cash Prizes ($1,000 total) for Best Posters. The presentation of a poster provided an alternative opportunity for presenting training ideas at the LAWTE meeting.

Learning Resource Center Event - Our newest addition to the meeting, August 18th from 4-7pm our "Learning Resource Center" was converted into a live event featuring "mini-sessions" on training resorces and skills. The event featured interactive stations and a poster session. Each station was manned by a speaker who gave a 5-7 minute presentation. The presentation was followed by discussion, practice or Q&A. Attendees mingled from station to station gathering ideas to bring back to their institutions. This event exemplified LAWTE's mission to exchange training information.

The Training Clinic - workshops presented by Ronald B Garnett:

The Next Level: Make Adult Learning Come to Life
Through hands-on activities, this session taught us how to use several easy and quick techniques to make your training more fun, interesting and effective. We learned how to: 1) trigger retention in learning activities; 2) sequence activities for impact; 3) identify creative and fun activities that appeal to various learning styles

Fun and Games: Their Place in Training
How can you design and facilitate games that will help you make learning points more creatively and effectively? Learn how to select appropriate games for your audience; ways to employ creative techniques for maximum learning; tricks for adapting a game or creative activity for maximum impact and application; and more.
