Media Training for You and Your Staff - Donna Marie Artuso, Affairs of the Art

This workshop is for executives, researchers, animal research staff, administrators and public affairs officers seeking to promote public understanding, respect, appreciation, and support for humane, responsible animal research. The interactive training session will help you advance positive, insightful and enlightening messages about animal research and in so doing, neutralize and ultimately eliminate extremist opposition to the practice. This session will be useful for anyone in the research community who is involved in public outreach and communication.

Train the Trainer - Deb Wenger, Consultant, Bruce Kennedy, AALAS

Many people become trainers because of their knowledge on a particular subject. However, the best trainers are those who realize the ability to train is not something gained from subject knowledge alone, but through an understanding of how to transfer that knowledge to others. This program has been designed to give trainers a comprehensive guide of core knowledge and key competencies expected of trainers.

The instructors will take a case study approach to address training in laboratory animal science. Cases involve; developing a curriculum, training various stakeholders, and focusing on the take-home message when everything is important. Participants will be asked to interactively participate in this workshop.

Setting up an AALAS Certification Training Program - Dr. Marc Hulin, Amgen, Dr. Stacy Pritt, Covance Research Products

This workshop will focus on how to develop and implement an in-house training program to effectively prepare candidates for the three AALAS technician certification exams (ALAT, LAT, and LATG). The workshop will cover the specifics of setting up a program to include PowerPoint presentations, quizzes and exams for all three levels using samples of three formats to help the "trainer to train". Additionally, motivational tools will be presented to help fully engage candidates. Some time will also be spent on how the AALAS Learning Library can be utilized within a certification training program, either as an adjunct or sole training tool.
